Learning How to Safely Jump Start Another Car

Safely jump-starting one car with another is simple if you understand how to connect the jumper cables.

  • Start by getting the two vehicles as close to each other so the cables can reach both batteries.
  • Be sure the car engine is off and both cars are in park before opening the hood.
  • Take the red jumper cable and connect to the battery's positive terminal in the car to be jumped. The other end of the red cable goes to positive on charged battery.
  • Take the black jumper cable and connect to battery's negative terminal in car with charged battery, and finally, last black cable to metal anywhere in car to be jumped to reduce sparking.
  • Crank over the car, then the other, then remove the cables once car is started.
